we don't do panic

Just a short note that we’re still fine. Despite fuel panic we drove to Ian today for work discussion, lunch and showers (he has his own septic system, and we are not supposed to use showers or toilets to avoid wastewater going everywhere where it shouldn’t go).

We will try to go on the fieldwork more or less as planned next week, although a day later. This may sound foolish, but really it will be good to be away from Christchurch at the moment, both for us, and for the city itself. The less people, the less sewage problems, less food and petrol needs, and so on.

Just a few minutes ago I received an email from my salsa instructor. She was the last person I was worried about as she lives and works in the city centre. But she and her family are fine. It was a huge relief.

We’re not going anywhere though apart from fieldwork. As I said, this is home now, and I’m not really the panicky kind. I’m quite sure that IF the earthquakes continue like this (no one knows) the house will come down at some point. Even the most earthquake resistant building is going to come down at some point. When you see how the house, the walls, the floor moves with each aftershock, you know nothing lasts forever… So when Chch keeps shaking, we might relocate within NZ. However, that is all long term thinking. For now, I just want my sampling over and done with and a normal life.
