Gumboots

Last week it actually rained quite a few days in a row, which was nice after the drought and all, but we had some outdoor adventures going on, so that we were frequently wearing our rubber boots (gumboots in NZ).

Firstly, we had agreed to dog-sit 2 large dogs. One of the other soil scientists living in Springston has 2 labradors, but he was going away on a tramping trip and asked various people if we could walk his dogs while he was away. So we ended up with 5 mornings of dog-duty in which we went to his house, got the dogs from their kennels, walked them to the domain, picked up their poo, gave them food and water, and put them back in the kennels. We agreed that this is the most dog-responsibility that we can handle, and it was nice to be out with them every day.

We also went to a concert in Christchurch in Hagley park. This was a very big thing for Christchurch people, the concert was a 25th anniversary of Salmonella dub and Tiki Taane, and that didn't really ring a bell with me, but we're not opposed to laid-back New Zealand reggae and our good friend Johannes was going so we went along. In rubber boots because Hagley Park was quite muddy.
The concert was once again such a nice kiwi-style affair, there were people of all ages and walks of life, and of very different plumages as well. It was a concert with a large line-up of other bands playing before the main act, and although I had tired a bit of kiwi reggae already long before Salmonella and Tiki, it was perpetually fascinating to watch the people. And the gumboots.
